Accepted to Top Programs including Cornell and Brown, She Chooses Duke to Continue Her Work Bridging Physics and Business, with an Eye Toward Innovation and Impact

Jasmina Barhoumi 鈥26Jasmina Barhoumi ’26 has long had a passion for science and business, and an appreciation for their capacity to solve some of the world鈥檚 most vexing problems. Barhoumi grew up in Germany, the home of renowned physicists Albert Einstein, Max Planck and Johann Klepper. As a student on the Heights, Barhoumi pursued her own study of physics, majoring in the discipline while minoring in computer science and business administration. Out of the classroom she developed her leadership, critical-thinking and communication skills, conducting independent research as an Ignite Fellow, playing soccer for the Dolphins, and joining Stempower, which provides mentorship and career support for women students pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering and math.聽

Now Barhoumi is preparing to take her next step in her personal and professional journey. She will soon begin a master鈥檚 degree program in engineering management at Duke University in the heart of North Carolina鈥檚 Research Triangle. Barhoumi is eager to continue the work of marrying her passion for science and business that was such an essential part of her Le Moyne experience. As an Ignite Fellow, she investigated methods to improve the sorting and recycling of plastics using spectroscopy and artificial intelligence analysis. She was drawn to this research because it could offer both environmental and economic benefits and, beyond that, it aligned with Le Moyne鈥檚 Jesuit values of service to others and advancing the greater good.聽

More than anything else I want to use my skills and my education to make a difference and to solve problems. There is nothing more meaningful or important to me than that.鈥

As she reflects on her time at Le Moyne, Barhoumi attributes her success as an undergraduate to two things. First, she embraced every opportunity, whether it was in the lab, on the soccer field or, most recently, when she participated in the Ethics in Engineering Case Competition, a multi day event hosted by Lockheed Martin that blends competition, education and networking. The second was the people who championed her along the way, individuals like Terri Mitchell 鈥85, the founder Stempower, and Meredith Tornabene and Leslie Streissguth, who serve respectively as the director as associate director of the Office of Career Advising and Development, and Stamatios Kyrkos, Ph.D., an associate professor of physics.聽聽聽

Barhoumi offered this advice to future Le Moyne students, particularly to women who want to work in STEM.聽

鈥淣o one expects you to be perfect,鈥 she says. 鈥淏e yourself and don鈥檛 give up. That will serve you well. You鈥檒l be amazed by what you can achieve when you push yourself a bit.鈥
